Grab some photos, hit upload. That’s it.
Quick, answer this one: what’s the quickest, easiest, no-sign-ups required way to get a bunch of photos from your iPhone to the internet, right now?
The quickest, easiest and no-sign-uppiest service I’ve yet seen has to be Photoset, a new thing from the people who make Tumblr.
Photoset is free, fast, and (here’s the thing I like most), makes no demands.
It doesn’t ask for a username and password. It doesn’t hassle you to connect it to social networks. It doesn’t want your email address. It doesn’t care who you are, or where you are. All it wants is your photos.
So you give it some photos. Either from your Camera Roll, or taken there and then, on the spot. There are no image editing functions. None. No filters, no crop, nothing. This app is about getting images from your phone to the web, and nothing more.
Once you’ve selected some pics, drag them around until they’re arranged the way you want them, and add optional metadata if you wish, then hit “Upload.” Your pictures are sent to photoset.com (or to your Tumblr, if you have one – hit the Options button to set that up) and assigned an easy-to-share URL.
Once they’re online, you can share your photos any way you like
You can share this URL in the usual ways, or just open it in Safari or copy it to your clipboard. It’s up to you. Your uploaded photosets look great on the web. Here’s an example, and here’s another. Click on a photo to view it large, and keep clicking to skip through all of them. View it on your iDevice and it still works just the way you’d expect it to, with swipes instead of clicks.
The app stores a history list of all the sets you’ve uploaded, so there’s no need for you to keep track of those sharable URLs. You can always find one again if you need it. And because your sets on Photoset come with no attached identity, no home page or blog, you don’t have to feel obliged to keep updating them. This isn’t like an account on Flickr, or maintaining a personal photo blog. It’s different. It’s more basic than that: “Hey friends, I have some photos I want you to see. You can see them here.”
There’s no pressure, no sales pitch, no ads, no sign-up, nothing shouting “WHY NOT GET ALL YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN TOO!” or “YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN TO FRIENDFACE TO VIEW THIS CONTENT” at you. It’s just free, simple, and fast. Bravo, Tumblr.
